Can a protein drink rebuild strength in cirrhosis?
NCT ID NCT06573229
First seen Sep 25, 2026 ยท Last updated Sep 25, 2026
Summary
Researchers test whether a daily nutritional supplement improves muscle function in people with cirrhosis and sarcopenia, a condition of muscle loss. Thirty adults with cirrhosis and a risk of sarcopenia receive either the supplement or a placebo for two months, along with standard nutritional counseling. The study measures changes in physical function, body composition, quality of life, and blood metabolites.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- A nutritional supplement containing whey protein, vitamin D, carnitine, HMB, perilla, arginine, coenzyme Q10, and inositol
- What this could lead to
- If the supplement helps, it could offer a low-risk way to support muscle strength and daily function in people with cirrhosis.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, short pilot study of 30 people, so any benefits may be modest or not hold up in larger trials. Supplements can also cause digestive upset or interact with other treatments.
