First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests a suicide prevention program called SUSTAIN, led by nurses and peers, for women at moderate to high suicide risk in Tajikistan. 96 women will be randomly assigned to either the SUSTAIN program or enhanced usual care, and followed for 9 months. The program includes individual, group, and family sessions over 8-12 weeks, aiming to reduce suicidal thoughts and attempts.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

SUSTAIN intervention (behavioral therapy sessions)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could provide an effective, scalable suicide prevention model for women in low-resource settings.

What could go wrong

This is a small pilot study with only 96 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The intervention may not reduce suicide risk more than usual care.
