Zapping a nerve in the neck may shield lungs after brain trauma

NCT ID NCT04935697

First seen Feb 16, 2026 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 12 times

Summary

This small pilot study tested a non-invasive device that stimulates the vagus nerve (a key nerve connecting the brain and body) in people hospitalized with mild-to-moderate traumatic brain injury. The goal was to see if this stimulation, added to standard care, could prevent severe lung problems and the need for a breathing machine. Only 3 people took part, so the results are very early and mainly help researchers design larger studies.
