Shocking therapy: electrical pulses may help ventilator patients recover muscle

NCT ID NCT07188350

First seen Sep 30, 2025 · Last updated May 14, 2026 · Updated 30 times

Summary

This study tests whether adding gentle electrical stimulation to the legs, alongside standard physical therapy, helps critically ill patients on breathing machines maintain or regain muscle strength. About 150 adults in the ICU will be randomly assigned to receive either physical therapy alone or physical therapy plus stimulation. The goal is to see if the extra stimulation reduces muscle weakness and speeds recovery.
