Immunotherapy duo shows promise for Tough-to-Treat kidney cancer
NCT ID NCT03075423
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This phase 2 trial tested whether combining two immunotherapy drugs, nivolumab and ipilimumab, works better than standard treatments for people with advanced non-clear cell kidney cancer. About 316 participants received either the drug combo or standard therapy. The main goal was to see how many were alive after 12 months. This study aims to find better options for a rare and hard-to-treat cancer type.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nivolumab plus ipilimumab (immunotherapy drugs)
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could become a new first-line treatment option for people with advanced non-clear cell kidney cancer, potentially improving survival.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 trial, so results are still preliminary. The combination may not prove better than standard care and can cause immune-related side effects.
