Could laughing gas lift depression in seniors?
NCT ID NCT05007028
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a one-hour dose of nitrous oxide (laughing gas) can quickly reduce depression symptoms in adults aged 60-90 whose depression hasn't improved with standard treatments. Sixty participants received either the gas or medical air, and their mood was tracked over two weeks. The goal was to see if this safe, fast-acting approach could offer relief for late-life depression.

What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a fast-acting, short-term option to relieve depression in older adults who haven't found relief from standard antidepressants.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 60 participants. The effects may be temporary, and not everyone responds. Side effects like nausea or dizziness are possible.
