Laughing gas could be new hope for depression

Summary

This study is testing whether nitrous oxide (commonly known as laughing gas) can help reduce symptoms of depression. Researchers will give 172 adults with major depressive disorder weekly one-hour breathing sessions of either nitrous oxide or a placebo air mixture for four weeks. The goal is to see if this safe, widely available gas can provide faster relief than traditional antidepressants while those medications take effect.
