Immunotherapy before surgery shows promise for early colon cancer
NCT ID NCT03026140
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether giving a short course of immunotherapy drugs before surgery can improve outcomes for people with early-stage colon cancer. Participants will receive a combination of nivolumab, ipilimumab, and possibly other drugs for about 6 to 12 weeks before their tumor is removed. The goal is to see if this approach is safe and can reduce the chance of the cancer coming back.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
nivolumab, ipilimumab, celecoxib, and BMS-986253 (anti-IL8)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a new standard of care using short-term immunotherapy before surgery to reduce the risk of cancer returning in early-stage colon cancer patients.
What could go wrong
This is an early-phase exploratory trial with a small number of participants, so results may not apply to all patients. Immunotherapy can cause serious side effects like inflammation of organs.
