New ultrasound technique could end the need for surgery to diagnose endometriosis
NCT ID NCT05523284
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a new ultrasound technique called SonoPODography (SPG) to diagnose superficial endometriosis, the most common form of the disease. Currently, diagnosis requires invasive surgery. The procedure involves injecting saline into the pelvis to create a clearer view of small lesions. Researchers will compare the accuracy of this method to standard surgery in 50 women with suspected superficial endometriosis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Saline-infused sonoPODgraphy (SPG) - a diagnostic ultrasound procedure using saline fluid
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a non-invasive way to diagnose superficial endometriosis, replacing the need for surgery.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small pilot study with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The technique is new and needs more testing before it can be widely used.
