New gel could beat toenail fungus faster
NCT ID NCT07382427
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 2 trial tests a new gel (AP4500) containing the antifungal drug terbinafine for mild to moderate toenail fungus. About 200 adults will apply the gel once or twice daily for 48 weeks. Researchers will compare it to a placebo and an existing treatment (Jublia) to see if it works faster or better.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
terbinafine hydrochloride topical solution (AP4500)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could lead to a faster, more effective topical treatment for toenail fungus that avoids the side effects of oral medication.
What could go wrong
This is an early Phase 2 trial with only 200 people, so results may not apply to everyone. Topical treatments often have limited nail penetration, and the new gel may not prove more effective than existing options.
