New scan could spare elderly from unnecessary steroid side effects

NCT ID NCT07010484

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study aims to improve how doctors diagnose polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), a painful inflammatory condition common in older adults. Current methods often lead to misdiagnosis and unnecessary treatment with steroids, which have serious side effects. Researchers will use a new PET/MRI imaging technique in 149 adults over 50 to see if it can more accurately identify PMR and guide safer treatment decisions.
