New scan could spare patients from unnecessary steroids

NCT ID NCT07010484

First seen Nov 01, 2025 · Last updated May 15, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study tests a new way to diagnose polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR), a painful inflammatory condition common in older adults. Current methods often lead to misdiagnosis and unnecessary steroid use, which can cause serious side effects. Researchers will use a combination of PET and MRI scans in 149 people suspected of having PMR to see if this improves accuracy. The goal is to help doctors decide who truly needs treatment and avoid giving steroids to those who don't.
