New drug cocktails aim to beat river blindness
NCT ID NCT06070116
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests four different drug combinations in 300 adults with onchocerciasis (river blindness), a parasitic disease. Participants first receive ivermectin to clear skin and eye parasites, then get one of the new combos. The goal is to see which combo is safest and most effective at killing adult worms and preventing disease spread.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Ivermectin, Albendazole, Diethylcarbamazine, Moxidectin
What this could lead to
If successful, these drug combinations could offer safer and more effective treatments for river blindness, potentially reducing the need for repeated doses.
What could go wrong
This is a phase 2 trial with 300 participants, so results are still early. The new combinations may cause side effects or not work better than existing treatments.
