Tiny skin biopsy reveals hidden nerve damage in kids with developmental disorders

NCT ID NCT05645874

First seen Dec 16, 2025 · Last updated May 11, 2026 · Updated 16 times

Summary

This study looked at tiny nerve fibers in the skin of 203 children to establish normal values and see if children with neurodevelopmental disorders (like mitochondrial disease, cerebral palsy, or developmental delay) have fewer nerve fibers, which could cause pain or autonomic problems. Healthy children having leg surgery provided skin samples to set reference ranges. The goal is to better understand and diagnose small fiber neuropathy in these children.
