New pain block study aims to speed recovery after heart surgery

NCT ID NCT07417462

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests two different nerve blocks to see which one better controls pain after open-heart surgery. 90 adults aged 40-60 having coronary bypass will get one of the blocks or a sham procedure. The goal is to reduce pain and the need for extra painkillers, helping patients recover more smoothly.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

bupivacaine and dexamethasone

What this could lead to

If one block works better, it could become the standard way to manage pain after open-heart surgery, helping patients recover faster with less medication.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-stage trial with only 90 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The blocks might not reduce pain significantly more than a sham procedure.
