Newborn brain map could sharpen seizure detection
NCT ID NCT03674034
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study used existing MRI and CT scans from 150 healthy newborns to build a combined head template. MRI shows soft tissues well, while CT is better for bone and the soft spots (fontanelles) on a baby's skull. The goal is to create a single reference image that helps doctors more accurately locate the source of brain activity, such as seizures, in newborns.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, this could provide a better reference map for analyzing newborn brain scans, helping doctors pinpoint the source of seizures or other brain activity more accurately.
What could go wrong
This is a small, retrospective study that only creates a template, not a treatment. The template may not work well for all newborns or in all hospitals.
