New Angle-Measuring tools could make biopsies more accurate

NCT ID NCT01218854

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026

Summary

This study tested two simple tools—a laser pointer and a plastic block—to help doctors pick the correct angle for inserting a biopsy needle during CT scans. Seventeen adults scheduled for a CT-guided biopsy took part. The goal was to see if these tools improved angle selection compared to the usual method of estimating by experience. No actual biopsies were performed using the tools; only the needle angle was measured.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, these guidance methods could make biopsies more accurate and reduce the need for repeat procedures.

What could go wrong

This was a very small, early-phase study (17 people) that only measured needle angle, not actual biopsy success. The methods may not improve outcomes in real procedures.
