Could a simple nose clip help millions breathe easier and smell again?
NCT ID NCT05920330
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
About 30 million US adults suffer from nasal sinus disease, often causing nasal obstruction and loss of smell. This study from Ohio State University will test a nasal plug (similar to a swimmer's nose clip) as a tool to better evaluate these symptoms. Researchers hope to develop new ways to measure and relieve nasal blockage, helping patients and doctors make more informed treatment choices. The study is currently recruiting 330 participants with nasal obstruction or smell loss.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Nasal Plug (Swimmer's nose clip)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could lead to better clinical tools for diagnosing and managing nasal obstruction and smell loss, allowing more personalized treatment decisions.
- What could go wrong
- This is an early-stage observational and device study focused on developing assessment tools, not testing a new treatment. The nasal plug is a simple device, and the main benefit is improved evaluation rather than a cure.
