New nasal swab test could spot hidden viruses in seniors
NCT ID NCT07601412
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study is testing whether measuring a natural immune marker called IFN-I in nasal swabs can help detect respiratory viral infections in older adults. Current PCR tests only look for a few viruses and can miss others or show old infections. The goal is to improve diagnosis, especially in geriatric wards, to better manage outbreaks and care. Researchers will compare the IFN-I score with standard PCR results in over 1,100 participants.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
IFN-I score measurement from nasal swabs
What this could lead to
If successful, this could lead to a faster, more accurate diagnostic test for respiratory viral infections in elderly patients, helping to guide isolation and treatment decisions.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage diagnostic study, not a treatment trial. The IFN-I response may be weaker in older adults, and the test may not reliably distinguish active from past infections.
