Doctors and nurses get a new tune to kick the habit: music therapy plus nicotine patch tested
NCT ID NCT07412717
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study tests whether adding music therapy to nicotine replacement therapy (patches and gum) helps healthcare professionals reduce smoking cravings more than nicotine therapy alone. 80 participants will be split into two groups and followed for 3 months. The study also looks at gut bacteria and genetics to find predictors of quitting success.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Nicotine patch and nicotine gum
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to help healthcare professionals quit smoking by combining music with standard nicotine replacement therapy.
What could go wrong
This is a small pilot study (80 people) that hasn't started yet. The music intervention may not reduce cravings more than nicotine therapy alone, and results may not apply to the general public.
