Classical music vs. anxiety: a simple test in the eye clinic
NCT ID NCT05904392
First seen Sep 15, 2026 · Last updated Sep 16, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
Intravitreal injections deliver medicine directly into the eye and are usually quick, but many patients feel anxious before and during the procedure. Researchers are testing whether playing classical music during the injection lowers anxiety and pain compared with no music. The trial enrolls 50 adults who have had at least one prior eye injection and randomly assigns them to hear music or not. Participants fill out anxiety questionnaires and rate their pain before and after the procedure.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only, not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- classical music played during the procedure
- What this could lead to
- If music helps, eye clinics could add a free, low-risk step to make injections less stressful for patients who return for repeated treatment.
- What could go wrong
- The trial is small and single-center, so any calming effect may be modest or may not hold for patients with diagnosed anxiety disorders, who are excluded.
