New hope for frail myeloma patients: targeted combo aims to control cancer with fewer side effects
NCT ID NCT03993912
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This Phase 3 trial is testing whether adding daratumumab (a targeted antibody) to standard lenalidomide treatment can help frail older adults with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma live longer without their cancer getting worse. Around 294 participants who are not candidates for high-dose chemotherapy will receive either the new combo or standard care. The goal is to find a gentler but effective option for this vulnerable group.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Daratumumab (a targeted antibody) combined with lenalidomide (a cancer drug)
What this could lead to
If successful, this combination could offer a more effective and less toxic first-line treatment option for frail older adults with multiple myeloma who cannot tolerate aggressive therapy.
What could go wrong
This is an early-stage Phase 3 trial, and results may not confirm a significant benefit over existing treatments. Side effects from the drug combination, such as infections or blood issues, remain possible.
