Heart-Smart cancer care: team approach tested in breast cancer patients

NCT ID NCT01621659

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether extra care from a team of heart doctors, dietitians, exercise therapists, pharmacists, and physiotherapists can reduce side effects in breast cancer patients receiving chemotherapy. About 80 participants will be randomly assigned to either the team intervention or usual care. The main goal is to see if this approach helps preserve heart function during and after cancer treatment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
multidisciplinary team intervention (cardiology, nutrition, exercise, pharmacy, physiotherapy assessments and counseling)
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that extra support from multiple health experts reduces heart damage and improves quality of life during and after cancer treatment.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase study with only 80 participants, so results may not apply to everyone. The extra care may not significantly improve outcomes over usual care.
