Can a precise nerve block stop shingles pain before it becomes chronic?
NCT ID NCT07732556
First seen Jul 29, 2026 · Last updated Jul 30, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This trial compares two ultrasound-guided nerve blocks — the midpoint transverse process to pleura (MTP) block and the erector spinae plane (ESP) block — for treating acute pain from shingles (herpes zoster) on the chest. About 90 adults with moderate to severe pain will receive one of the two blocks, which combine a numbing medication (bupivacaine) with an anti-inflammatory steroid (methylprednisolone). The goal is to see which block provides better pain relief and whether it can prevent postherpetic neuralgia, a chronic pain condition that can linger after the rash heals.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- a nerve block using bupivacaine and methylprednisolone
- What this could lead to
- If one block proves superior, it could offer a more effective way to control shingles pain and reduce the risk of lasting nerve pain.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage comparison. Results may not apply to all patients, and nerve blocks carry risks like infection or bleeding.
