Could umbilical cord stem cells help failing kidneys?
NCT ID NCT07240987
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This early-stage trial tests whether a single intravenous infusion of stem cells from donated umbilical cord tissue can safely improve kidney function in 32 adults with stage 3 or 4 chronic kidney disease caused by diabetes or high blood pressure. Participants will be randomly assigned to receive either the stem cells or a placebo (salt water) and will be followed for one year. The main goal is to see if the treatment can raise the kidney's filtration rate and reduce protein in the urine, which are signs of better kidney health.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- umbilical cord mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this could point toward a new way to slow or partly reverse kidney decline in chronic kidney disease, potentially delaying the need for dialysis or transplant.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very early (Phase 1/2) and small (32 people) trial, so results may not be conclusive. Stem cell infusions carry risks like allergic reactions or infection, and the treatment may not improve kidney function.
