New MRI technique could spare asthma patients from radiation
NCT ID NCT03089346
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a special MRI technique can measure airway thickness in asthma patients as well as CT scans do, but without radiation. Thirty adults with asthma underwent both scans. The goal is to find a safer way to monitor airway changes over time.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
What this could lead to
If successful, MRI could replace CT scans for monitoring asthma, avoiding radiation exposure.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-stage study with only 30 participants, so results may not apply widely. MRI may not be as accurate as CT.
