New MRI scan could help surgeons spot hidden endometriosis
NCT ID NCT03186820
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tested whether a special MRI technique called susceptibility weighted imaging (SWI) can better detect endometriosis lesions before surgery. Endometriosis spots often contain old blood, which SWI is good at seeing. Researchers compared SWI-MRI findings with what surgeons actually found during surgery in 74 women. If SWI-MRI proves accurate, it could help surgeons plan more complete removal of endometriosis.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Susceptibility Weighted Imaging (SWI) MRI sequence
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this MRI technique could help surgeons find endometriosis spots more accurately before surgery, leading to better surgical outcomes.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early exploratory study with only 74 participants. The technique may not prove more effective than standard MRI, and results may not apply to all patients.
