Could a new drug combo beat elephantiasis?
NCT ID NCT04410406
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tested whether a drug called moxidectin, combined with other medicines, works better than the standard treatment (ivermectin combinations) for lymphatic filariasis, a parasitic disease that can cause severe swelling. 164 adults with the infection received a single dose of one of four drug combinations. Researchers checked blood samples over 36 months to see if the parasites were cleared. The goal is to find a more effective single-dose treatment to help control and eventually eliminate the disease.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Moxidectin (Mox) 8 mg, Ivermectin (IVM) 200 µg/kg, Diethylcarbamazine (DEC) 6 mg/kg, Albendazole (ABZ) 400 mg
What this could lead to
If moxidectin combinations work better, this could offer a more effective single-dose treatment for lymphatic filariasis, reducing transmission and disease burden.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 3 trial with 164 participants, so results are available but may not apply to all populations. The drugs can cause side effects like dizziness or allergic reactions, and long-term benefits are still being studied.
