Emergency room study tests if social support boosts dental visits

NCT ID NCT05688982

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests whether giving emergency department patients information about local dental and social resources—plus phone navigation help—can increase the number of people who actually go to a dentist. About 2,927 adults with unmet dental needs will be split into three groups: one gets a general handout, another gets a handout with nearby resources, and the third gets the handout plus active phone assistance. The main goal is to see who completes a dental appointment.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If successful, this could show that giving patients personalized resource lists and phone help improves dental care access.

What could go wrong

This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial. Results may vary by location and patient engagement, and the benefit may be small.
