New pinhole gum surgery could reduce pain and improve smiles
NCT ID NCT07162207
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a modified pinhole surgical technique for treating localized gum recession. It compares using a bi-layer collagen membrane versus a connective tissue graft to cover exposed tooth roots. The trial involves 18 healthy adults with gum recession and will measure changes in gum depth, width, thickness, and patient satisfaction over 6 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Bi-layer collagen membrane or connective tissue graft
What this could lead to
If successful, this could offer a less invasive, equally effective option for covering exposed tooth roots, reducing pain and improving gum appearance.
What could go wrong
This is a very small, early-stage trial with only 18 patients, so results may not apply to everyone. The collagen membrane may not work as well as the standard graft, and long-term outcomes are unknown.
