New flu vaccine manufacturing process put to the test
NCT ID NCT01773928
First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026
Summary
This study tested a seasonal flu vaccine made with a modified manufacturing process in healthy adults aged 18 and older. The goal was to see if the new process produces a vaccine that works as well as the current version and is as safe as a licensed flu vaccine. About 1,928 participants received one of three vaccines, and researchers measured immune responses and side effects.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Vero cell-derived trivalent seasonal influenza vaccine (modified manufacturing process)
What this could lead to
If successful, this could confirm that the modified manufacturing process produces a flu vaccine that is as effective and safe as current versions.
What could go wrong
This is a completed Phase 3 trial, but results may show the modified vaccine is not as effective or has more side effects than existing vaccines. The study also only included healthy adults, so findings may not apply to everyone.
