Could a pacemaker also treat high blood pressure? a new device aims to do both.
NCT ID NCT03757377
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This trial tests a special pacemaker called the Moderato System in people who need a pacemaker and have high blood pressure that is hard to control with medication. The device is implanted like a regular pacemaker and may help lower blood pressure by adjusting the heart's pacing. About 200 participants will be randomly assigned to have the blood-pressure-lowering feature turned on or off for 12 months, while continuing their usual blood pressure drugs. The study measures whether the device safely reduces average blood pressure over 24 hours.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- BackBeat Moderato System (implantable device)
- What this could lead to
- If it works, this device could offer a new way to control blood pressure without extra drugs for people who already need a pacemaker.
- What could go wrong
- This is a mid-stage trial with 203 participants. The device is implanted and carries surgical risks, and the blood-pressure benefit may be modest or not last long-term.
