Blood test may spare thousands from unneeded colonoscopies
NCT ID NCT06955767
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing whether a blood test that measures a protein called MMP14 can help screen for colorectal cancer. Researchers will enroll 650 people aged 50 to 74 who already need a colonoscopy after a positive stool test. By comparing MMP14 levels with colonoscopy results, they hope to find a cutoff that accurately identifies who truly has cancer or precancerous growths, potentially reducing the number of unnecessary colonoscopies.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
MMP14 blood test
What this could lead to
If successful, this blood test could help avoid unnecessary colonoscopies in people with a positive FIT result, making screening less invasive and more efficient.
What could go wrong
This is an early study to find the best cutoff value, not a treatment trial. The test may not be accurate enough to replace colonoscopy, and results need validation in larger populations.
