Video game tech could make oral cancer surgery more precise

NCT ID NCT07466810

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether a mixed reality system, similar to video game technology, can help surgeons remove oral cancer and rebuild the area more accurately. Thirty people with oral cancer will be split into three groups: one using mixed reality, one using a virtual surgical guide, and one having standard surgery. The goal is to see if the mixed reality approach leads to a better match between the rebuilt tissue and the original defect.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mixed reality technology (Unreal Engine 5-based)

What this could lead to

If successful, this could make oral cancer surgery more accurate, improving how well rebuilt tissue matches the original shape and reducing complications.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early exploratory trial with only 30 people, so results may not apply to everyone. The technology is new and may not work better than current methods.
