Could an antidepressant ease Post-Mastectomy pain?

NCT ID NCT06499090

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study looked at whether taking mirtazapine, a common antidepressant, before and after mastectomy surgery can reduce pain and the need for strong painkillers. 62 women scheduled for mastectomy were given either mirtazapine or a placebo daily for two weeks. Researchers measured pain levels, morphine use, and recovery quality to see if mirtazapine helps.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Mirtazapine 30 mg tablet

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a simple, low-cost way to reduce pain after mastectomy and lower the risk of long-term nerve pain.

What could go wrong

This is a very early, small study (62 people) with no long-term follow-up. The results may not apply to all patients, and mirtazapine can cause side effects like drowsiness or dizziness.
