ER visit sparks life planning: study tests motivational interviewing for advance care planning

NCT ID NCT06090240

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests whether motivational interviewing (a supportive conversation style) can help older adults who recently visited the ER and their family caregivers complete advance care plans. 300 pairs (older adult + caregiver) will either receive three counselling sessions or a self-education booklet. The goal is to see if the talks boost readiness to document healthcare wishes.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance
motivational interviewing (MI) counselling sessions
What this could lead to
If it works, this could show that a few counselling sessions after an ER visit help older adults complete advance care plans and make their wishes known.
What could go wrong
This is a behavioral study, not a drug trial, so the effect may be small. Results depend on participants' willingness to engage, and the study is limited to Chinese-speaking dyads in Hong Kong.
