Smarter magnesium testing could shield Children's hearts and kidneys after surgery

NCT ID NCT06564376

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study tests two ways of measuring magnesium in the blood to personalize magnesium sulfate (MgSO4) dosing for children after heart surgery. Low magnesium levels can lead to heart rhythm problems and kidney injury. One method measures total magnesium, while the other measures only the active form. The goal is to see which approach better reduces complications. Researchers will monitor heart rhythms and kidney function in 96 children undergoing heart surgery with a heart-lung machine.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

magnesium sulfate (MgSO4)

What this could lead to

If active magnesium measurement proves better, it could lead to personalized magnesium dosing that reduces dangerous heart rhythms and kidney injury after pediatric heart surgery.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase study with 96 children, so results may not apply broadly. The two measurement methods may not differ enough to change outcomes.
