Could a common drug help stroke patients heal faster?
NCT ID NCT07575984
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study is testing a drug called Mexidol in people who have had an ischemic stroke (a stroke caused by a blocked blood vessel in the brain). The goal is to see if Mexidol can reduce the size of the brain injury and improve recovery. The trial will involve 120 adults aged 18 to 90 who are treated within the first few days after their stroke. Participants will receive Mexidol as an IV infusion for 10 days, followed by tablets for 60 days, on top of standard stroke care.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Mexidol (ethylmethylhydroxypyridine succinate) given as an IV solution and later as tablets
What this could lead to
If it works, this could point toward a treatment that limits brain damage and improves recovery after an ischemic stroke.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase pilot study (120 people) in Russia, so results may not apply broadly. The drug is already approved for other uses, but its benefit for stroke is unproven, and there is a risk of side effects like bleeding.
