Diabetes drug metformin takes on deadly brain cancer in new trial
NCT ID NCT04945148
First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This phase 2 trial is testing whether adding the diabetes drug metformin to standard radiation and chemotherapy can help people with a specific type of glioblastoma, a fast-growing brain cancer. The study will include about 64 patients whose tumors have a particular energy-making profile (OXPHOS-positive). Participants will take metformin daily alongside standard treatment, and researchers will track how long the cancer stays under control and overall survival.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
Metformin
What this could lead to
If it works, this could offer a new, well-tolerated treatment option for a specific subtype of glioblastoma, potentially slowing tumor growth.
What could go wrong
This is a small, early-phase trial (phase 2) with only 64 participants. The benefit may be modest or not confirmed in larger studies, and metformin may cause gastrointestinal side effects.
