Common diabetes drug could shield Veterans' hearts

Summary

This large VA study is testing whether metformin, a common diabetes medication, can prevent heart attacks, strokes, and death in veterans who have pre-diabetes and existing heart or blood vessel disease. Over 7,400 participants will receive either metformin or a placebo pill, along with lifestyle advice, to see which group has fewer serious heart problems. The goal is to see if starting this medication early, before full diabetes develops, can protect the heart.
