Could a diabetes drug lift depression in HIV patients?

NCT ID NCT07007221

First seen Jan 17, 2026 · Last updated May 23, 2026 · Updated 18 times

Summary

This study tests whether metformin, a common diabetes drug, can help treat depression in people living with HIV. Depression is common in this group and can make it harder to stick with HIV treatment. The trial has three parts, starting with dose testing, then a placebo comparison, and finally a larger study that also compares metformin to the antidepressant fluoxetine. About 600 adults with HIV and depression will take part at clinics in Uganda.
