Could a diabetes drug shield your brain after radiation?

NCT ID NCT06377696

First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 26, 2026 · Updated 2 times

Summary

This study tests whether metformin, a diabetes drug, and wearable activity trackers can help prevent memory and thinking problems after cranial radiation for brain tumors. About 100 patients will take metformin or not, and complete remote cognitive tests and wear a device. The main goal is to see if remote monitoring is feasible, while also checking if metformin reduces cognitive decline.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Metformin

What this could lead to

If it works, this could point toward a way to protect thinking and memory after brain radiation, using a common diabetes drug and wearable devices.

What could go wrong

This is a small, early-phase trial focused on feasibility, not proof of benefit. Metformin may not help cognition, and side effects or low compliance could limit results.
