New DNA test could speed up pneumonia diagnosis in ICU patients
NCT ID NCT05979350
First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This study tests whether a new DNA-sequencing technique (metagenomic next-generation sequencing) can identify the cause of pneumonia faster than standard methods. About 114 ICU patients on ventilators will be randomly assigned to receive either the new test or usual care. The goal is to see if faster diagnosis leads to better antibiotic use, shorter hospital stays, and lower death rates.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
Active substance
metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) test
What this could lead to
If successful, this could make pneumonia diagnosis faster and more accurate, helping doctors choose the right antibiotics sooner and potentially reducing hospital stays and deaths.
What could go wrong
This is a relatively small trial (114 participants) and focuses on diagnostic accuracy, not a new treatment. The test may not improve patient outcomes significantly, and its benefits may not apply to all pneumonia patients.
