Sugar tracking study aims to unlock breast Cancer's fuel secrets
NCT ID NCT05736367
First seen Jun 27, 2026 ยท Last updated Jun 27, 2026
Summary
This pilot study looks at how hormone receptor positive/HER2 negative breast cancer uses glucose and other nutrients for energy. Sixteen participants with early-stage breast cancer will receive a special labeled sugar infusion before surgery. Researchers will then analyze tumor and healthy tissue samples to map metabolic pathways, which could help identify new treatment targets in the future.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only โ not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- U-13C-glucose (a special labeled sugar given by infusion to track how tumors use energy)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this study could reveal new metabolic targets for treating HR+/HER2- breast cancer, potentially leading to more effective therapies.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot study (16 people) with no treatment being tested. It only aims to understand metabolism, not to cure or control the disease. Results may not lead to any practical changes.
