First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests a program called MENU that gives caregivers of young children (ages 2-5) practical tools while they wait for an autism evaluation. The program is tailored to each family's needs and includes strategies to improve caregiver mental health, child communication, and behavior. Up to 60 underserved families in Texas will participate over about 12 weeks, with follow-up after 3 months.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- behavioral intervention (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Enhanced Milieu Teaching, RUBI parent training)
- What this could lead to
- If successful, this could provide a scalable, evidence-based support option for families stuck on long waitlists for an autism diagnosis, improving caregiver mental health and child communication.
- What could go wrong
- This is a very small pilot study (60 participants) with no control group, so results may not be generalizable. The intervention is behavioral and depends on caregiver engagement, which may vary widely.
