Can a tired brain weaken your jump?
NCT ID NCT07754604
First seen Aug 10, 2026 · Last updated Aug 11, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study asks whether the length of time spent on a mentally demanding task changes brain activity and explosive leg power. Twelve healthy young men who exercise regularly will perform a challenging attention task for 10, 15, or 30 minutes, or watch a calm nature documentary. Before and after each session, their brain activity is measured with EEG, and they perform a countermovement jump to test leg power. The goal is to see if longer mental fatigue leads to greater changes in brain and jump performance, which could help athletes and students understand how mental tiredness affects physical activity.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- Behavioral interventions: Stroop color-word task (10, 15, or 30 minutes) to induce mental fatigue, and a nature documentary as a control condition.
- What this could lead to
- If longer mental fatigue impairs jump performance, this could inform athletes and coaches about optimal rest and training schedules.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 12 participants, so results may not apply broadly. The effects may be subtle or inconsistent.
