One dose of methadone may improve recovery after surgery

NCT ID NCT07565870

First seen Jun 25, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This Phase 3 trial will test whether a single dose of methadone given during surgery can improve pain control and recovery compared to standard short-acting opioids. About 400 adults having intermediate-risk noncardiac surgery will take part. The main goal is to see if patients feel better the day after surgery.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

Methadone (a long-acting opioid painkiller)

What this could lead to

If it works, this could offer a simple way to reduce post-surgery pain and speed up recovery with fewer opioid-related side effects.

What could go wrong

This is a single-dose approach in a specific surgery type, so results may not apply broadly. Methadone carries risks like respiratory depression, and the trial is not yet recruiting.
