Face-Off: natural blood injection vs drug for stubborn melasma
NCT ID NCT07540702
First seen Jun 24, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time
Summary
This study tests whether injecting platelet-rich fibrin (made from your own blood) works better than tranexamic acid for treating facial melasma, a common skin condition causing dark patches. Twenty-one women with melasma will receive one treatment on each side of their face. The goal is to see which reduces pigmentation more safely over five sessions.
What this could mean
Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.
- Active substance
- platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) and tranexamic acid
- What this could lead to
- If i-PRF works better or as well as tranexamic acid, it could offer a new, natural treatment option for melasma with fewer side effects.
- What could go wrong
- This is a small, early-stage study with only 21 participants. Results may not apply to everyone, and both treatments may cause temporary redness, swelling, or bruising.
