Experimental vaccine aims to stop melanoma recurrence in its tracks

NCT ID NCT01898039

First seen Jun 26, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026 · Updated 1 time

Summary

This study tests a vaccine made from modified melanoma cells in patients who had their tumors removed but are at high risk of recurrence. The vaccine is designed to train the immune system to recognize and attack any remaining cancer cells. Up to 50 participants will receive multiple injections over several months, with researchers monitoring safety and immune response.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

Active substance

A2/4-1BBL melanoma vaccine (M20/A2B cells)

What this could lead to

If successful, this vaccine could help prevent melanoma from coming back in patients at high risk of recurrence after tumor removal.

What could go wrong

This is an early phase I/II trial with only 50 participants, so results may not apply to all patients. The vaccine may cause side effects or fail to stimulate a strong enough immune response.
