New blood test may speed up infection detection in emergency rooms

NCT ID NCT05296590

First seen May 20, 2026 · Last updated Jun 15, 2026 · Updated 5 times

Summary

This study looks at whether a blood test called Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) can help doctors quickly identify patients with bloodstream infections (bacteremia) in the emergency department. Researchers will study 50,000 ER patients who had blood cultures ordered to see how accurate MDW is at spotting infections. If successful, this test could help doctors start the right antibiotics sooner.
