Blood test may spot infection risk in elderly hip fracture patients

NCT ID NCT07350785

First seen Jun 27, 2026 · Last updated Jun 27, 2026

Summary

This study looks at whether a blood test marker called Monocyte Distribution Width (MDW) can help predict complications and survival in elderly patients with hip fracture. Researchers will follow 100 patients aged 65 and older, measuring MDW and other inflammatory markers at admission and after surgery. The goal is to see if MDW can identify those at higher risk for infections or death, which could lead to earlier and better care.

What this could mean

Our plain-language read of the trial. This is informational only — not medical advice or a prediction.

What this could lead to

If MDW proves reliable, doctors could use a simple blood test to identify high-risk hip fracture patients early and provide closer monitoring.

What could go wrong

This is a small observational study, not a treatment trial. MDW may not be accurate enough to change practice, and results may not apply to all patients.
